Fishing at the Rising Sun

Rising Sun Inn Beats

The Rising Sun Inn, Umberleigh, North Devon has always been a Mecca for Salmon, Sea Trout and Brown Trout Fisherman. The stunning River Taw runs nearly passed the door providing some of the finest fly fishing in the West Country. The Inn still retains over a mile of private fishing split into two beats consisting of sixteen named pools including the famous Bear pit, Hut pool and Home pool. The season runs between March and September.
In the last few seasons the beats have produced fantastic fly fishing specimens – a 11.5lb sea trout, a 23lb salmon and a 12oz and 1.25lb brown salmon so the opportunities to catch a fish of a lifetime are here. Think you can beat this?
Jules, the Landlord, has fished this river for over 40 years and is always available for advice over a pint or offers a Ghillie service for the less experienced fly fisher. Contact him on 01769 560447 or to book your lesson now.
Wading is necessary on most of the pools.
For the salmon a 13 - 15 foot double handed rod is recommended. Flies for salmon are Silver Stoats Tail, Willie Gunn, Ally Shrimp, Cascade or Garry Dog with the size dependent on water heights.
For the Sea trout an Alexandra, Tail Blue and Silver Stoats Tail, Peter Ross or Connemara Black should do the trick.
Beats are let for 24 hours (6am to 6pm) and are rotated daily.
